This study examined the functions and frequency of hedges used in research articles in two softpure principles (economics and linguistics) and two soft-applied ones (English language teaching and tourism management). A corpus of 20 research articles, with five from each fields, were randomly selectedfor the study. It was found that most hedges and boosters found in the research articles in these soft principles belonged to Salager-Meyer (1994)’s Shields Type, which was directly involved strategies in writing uncertain arguments. No significant difference in using Shields between the four soft disciplines was found, but there were some significant differences in the correlation of some of them. Keywords: hedging, boosting, soft-pure disciplines, soft-applied disciplines.
